As Lithuania plans to develop offshore wind parks in the Baltic Sea, an additional survey of an almost 6.5 km long underwater object was carried out by order of the Ministry of Energy. The experts of the Coastal Research and Planning Institute established that the object could be a part of a cut cable or wire. <\/strong><\/p>

The linear object was discovered in 2022-2023 during research on the bottom of the Baltic Sea. The purpose of the additional magnetic survey is to collect more data about the object located in the marine area.<\/p>

The area of \u200b\u200bthe planned territory in the Baltic Sea for the park, where the object has been researched, is about 136.39 km2 and is about 30 kilometers from the coast. The conducted research showed that the linear object has no further continuation, it may be part of a cut cable or wire. It is hoped that this additional information will be useful to developers planning to participate in the upcoming tender.<\/p>

To reduce Lithuania\u2019s dependence on electricity imports and to achieve full self-sufficiency in domestic renewable electricity by 2030, the Ministry of Energy is planning two offshore wind farms with a combined capacity of 1.4 GW in the Baltic Sea in the territory of Lithuania. These farms could generate around 6 TWh of green electricity per year, which is around half of current electricity demand of Lithuania.<\/p>

The Government has confirmed that the tender for the development of the second 700 MW offshore wind farm in Lithuania will be announced on November 18 of 2024.\u00a0<\/p>

The institution organizing the competition is the National Energy Regulatory Council (NERC). All tender documents and terms and conditions can be found on the NERC website: NERC Tenders for the use of marine territory for the development and operation of power plants using renewable energy resources<\/a><\/p>

In preparation for the tender, the Ministry of Energy approved the concept of the development plan<\/a> for the engineering infrastructure at sea and on land, the work on the preparation of concrete solutions for the development plan continues, the environmental impact assessment report of the offshore wind power park was approved, as well as geophysical and geotechnical investigations of the seabed in the area intended for the park, measured wind speed and other hydrometeorological parameters.<\/p>
